Adelaide Eco-housing Competition

Whitemore Square, Adelaide

sustainable urban housing
completed in 2004
for Adelaide Affordable Eco-housing Competition

Olsson Associates were awarded a Commendation for Social Dimensions and Planning in this national design competition.

Located on one of Adelaide’s main squares, this competition project seeks to address issues of affordability, sustainability and urban context in an urban housing project.

Thirty equal sized apartments are arranged around four communal stairs raised over a semi-basement carpark. The building steps in height from four storeys that addresses the square and the corner, to three storeys with a two storey balcony motif that respects the scale of neighbouring heritage buildings.

The built form strongly defines three open spaces on the site which each have a different identity and purpose. A paved entry court set around a tree collects water. A reed pond links the court to the garden and recycles roof and storm water. The garden has thirty individual plots planted with vegetables and productive fruit trees which uses the recycled water for irrigation. A fourth space, a roof garden, is provided as a communal open space with barbecue.
