THE SHELLS DESIGN COMPETITION
BRIGHTON-LE-SANDS NSW

The competition brief called for the design of a mixed-use building which carefully integrated the heritage listed terraces located at the northern edge of the Brighton-Le-Sands local centre.

The OLSSON concept was to create a ten storey tower which was divided into four distinct volumes with inspiration drawn from shells. Eight levels of residential apartments were to float over the activated base containing a cafe, a commercial area as well as community spaces. The developed was anchored by the heritage terraces located on the primary street frontage. Each aspect is addressed, breaking down the mass of the facade when viewed from the street. Breaking the building form down in this manner also provided functional benefits for passive design as well as privacy.

The proposal had a combined GFA of 3,800m2 across ten storeys and featured thirty one apartments which were designed to embrace beach side living.
